Stroke Rehabilitation, MS, Spinal Cord Injury & Neuro-Rehab Specialists

Neurological physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physiotherapy focused on helping people recover function, mobility, and independence following neurological conditions - injuries or diseases that affect the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nervous system.

Yael Weiser Aviram brings over 15 years of dedicated neurological rehabilitation experience to her Midtown Toronto clinic. She trained at the Loewenstein Rehabilitation Hospital - one of the world's most comprehensive neurological rehabilitation centres - and has worked with hundreds of patients across a wide spectrum of neurological conditions

What We Treat

  • Stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic)

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Spinal Cord Injuries (complete and incomplete)

  • Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS)

  • Parkinson's Disease

  • Muscular Dystrophy

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and head trauma

  • Post-brain surgery rehabilitation

  • Other neurological conditions affecting movement and function

What Treatment Involves

Every patient begins with a comprehensive assessment of their neurological function, mobility, strength, balance, coordination, and day-to-day goals. Treatment plans are built around the individual - their specific condition, current functional level, and what they want to be able to do.

Treatment techniques may include:

  • Gait training and walking rehabilitation

  • Balance and coordination exercises

  • Upper and lower limb strengthening and retraining

  • Spasticity management

  • Transfer training (getting in/out of bed, chair, car)

  • Fatigue management strategies (especially for MS patients)

  • Functional task training - relearning daily activities

  • Home exercise program development

  • Home visit assessment for environmental modifications and safety

What Makes Neurological Physiotherapy Different

Neurological physiotherapy is not the same as general physiotherapy. It requires in-depth knowledge of how the nervous system controls movement, how it responds to injury, and how it can be retrained through targeted exercise and rehabilitation techniques.

The nervous system has a remarkable capacity for change - a principle known as neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity means that with the right kind of practice, repetition, and challenge, the brain and nervous system can form new connections and compensate for damaged ones. The goal of neurological physiotherapy is to harness this capacity through evidence-based, individualized treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between neurological physiotherapy and regular physiotherapy?

A: Neurological physiotherapy requires specialized training and expertise in how the nervous system works and recovers. A neuro-physio understands concepts like spasticity, neuroplasticity, motor relearning, and the specific challenges of conditions like stroke, MS, or spinal cord injury. General physiotherapy training does not typically include this depth of neurological focus.

Q: When should I start neurological physiotherapy after a stroke?

A: As early as possible - neurological rehabilitation begun in the acute phase after stroke has been shown to significantly improve outcomes. However, it is never too late to start. Even patients who are years post-stroke can make meaningful functional gains with the right rehabilitation support.

Q: Can physiotherapy help with MS symptoms?

A: Yes. While physiotherapy cannot change the course of MS itself, it is highly effective at managing its symptoms — including fatigue, weakness, balance problems, and mobility difficulties. Regular, appropriately dosed exercise has also been shown to slow functional decline in many MS patients.

Q: Do you offer home visits for neurological patients?

A: Yes - home visits are a core part of our service, particularly for neurological patients who have difficulty travelling. Home visits also allow Yael to assess the patient's living environment, identify safety risks, and make practical recommendations for home modifications and daily function.

Q: Will OHIP or my insurance cover neurological physiotherapy?

A: OHIP does not cover private physiotherapy. However, many extended health benefit plans cover physiotherapy services - we recommend checking your plan. Some plans also cover home visits. Following a hospitalization, physiotherapy referrals through your hospital team may also be available.

Q: Can you communicate with my neurologist?

A: Absolutely - and we encourage it. Yael sends progress reports to referring physicians after the initial assessment and at key recovery milestones, ensuring your neurologist stays informed.

Yael also provides Lymphedema Treatment and Facial Nerve Palsy Rehabilitation at the same Midtown Toronto clinic.

Our clinic is located at 418 Eglinton Ave W, Toronto, ON M5N 1A2 - accessible entrance, Green P parking nearby.

Home visits are available for patients with limited mobility.
