Manual Lymph Drainage, Complete Decongestive Therapy & ADP Authorization
Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by damage or blockage in the lymphatic system, resulting in persistent swelling, most commonly in the arms or legs.
It affects more than one million Canadians annually and is particularly common following cancer treatment that involves lymph node removal or radiation.
At Yael Weiser Aviram Physiotherapy in Midtown Toronto, we provide specialized lymphedema management using evidence-based techniques. Yael is a certified Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) therapist trained in Dr. Vodder's method - the gold standard in lymphedema care - and an ADP Authorizer, meaning she can directly prescribe compression garments without requiring an additional referral.
What We Treat
-
Primary lymphedema (congenital or developmental lymphatic insufficiency)
-
Secondary lymphedema - most commonly following breast cancer, melanoma, gynecological, or head and neck cancer treatment
-
Post-surgical swelling and edema
-
Swelling following injury or trauma
-
Lymphedema associated with venous insufficiency
-
Post-cosmetic procedure swelling and lymphatic congestion
-
Headaches with a lymphatic component
What Treatment Involves
Treatment for lymphedema at our Toronto clinic follows the internationally recognized Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) protocol, which includes:
-
Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD): A specialized, gentle massage technique that stimulates lymphatic flow and redirects fluid away from congested areas
-
Compression Therapy: Multi-layer bandaging and/or fitted compression garments to maintain results between sessions - Yael can prescribe these directly as an ADP Authorizer
-
Exercise Therapy: Targeted movement programs that activate the lymphatic system and maintain mobility
-
Skin Care: Education on skin hygiene and protection to reduce infection risk
-
Self-Management Education: Teaching patients and caregivers how to manage the condition day-to-day
What to Expect
Your first appointment begins with a comprehensive assessment of your condition, history, and goals. Yael will measure affected limb volumes, assess tissue changes, and design a treatment plan tailored to your specific stage and severity of lymphedema.
Treatment frequency varies by individual needs. Many patients attend 2–3 times per week in the intensive phase, tapering to maintenance sessions once reduction is achieved.
Home visits are available for patients who have difficulty travelling to the clinic.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and how does it differ from regular massage?
A: MLD is a highly specialized, gentle technique that uses precise hand movements and light pressure to stimulate the lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin. It is very different from traditional massage - the pressure is much lighter, and the movements follow the specific pathways of the lymphatic system. It is not a relaxation massage and should only be performed by a certified therapist.

Q: Can physiotherapy cure lymphedema?
A: Lymphedema is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, but it can be very effectively managed. With consistent treatment and self-care, most patients achieve a significant reduction in swelling and a much-improved quality of life. The goal of treatment is to reduce swelling, prevent progression, and give you the tools to manage it independently.

Q: What is an ADP Authorizer and why does it matter?
A: ADP (Assistive Devices Program) is an Ontario government program that subsidizes the cost of compression garments for eligible patients. An ADP Authorizer - like Yael - is a certified professional who can assess your needs and authorize your garments directly, without you needing a separate referral from a physician. This saves time and simplifies access to coverage.

Q: Does OHIP cover lymphedema physiotherapy?
A: OHIP does not cover physiotherapy services in a private clinic setting. However, many extended health benefit plans (through employers or private insurance) cover physiotherapy, and the ADP program subsidizes compression garments. We recommend checking your benefit plan details.

Q: How many sessions will I need?
A: This depends on the severity of your lymphedema and how long it has been present. Mild to moderate cases may see significant improvement in 8–12 sessions. More advanced lymphedema typically requires a longer intensive phase. Yael will give you a realistic estimate at your initial assessment.

Q: Can I be referred by my oncologist or surgeon?
A: Yes - and we actively encourage referrals from oncologists, lymphedema nurses, surgeons, and other healthcare providers. We commit to sending a brief progress report back to the referring clinician after the initial assessment and at key milestones.
Yael also provides Neurological Rehabilitation and Facial Nerve Palsy Rehabilitation at the same Midtown Toronto clinic.
